explanation of events
Stroke: Every shot counts, penalties apply. Nett score is gross score subtract the handicap. Eg 93 - 22 = nett 71
Par: Played to handicap. Players either win, lose or halve a hole based on par being a half. Any score under is a win and any score over par is a loss.
Stableford: Scoring is based on bogey 1pt, par 2 pts, birdie 3 pts, eagle 4 pts, albatross 5 pts taking handicap and hole index into consideration.
Pinehurst: Teams of two players. Teammates switch balls after their tee shots, select the one best ball after their second shots, and then play alternate shots until the ball is holed.
Ambrose: All players tee off, the best shot is selected and all players hit again from that same spot. The best second shot is selected, and all players hit from that same spot, and so on until the ball is holed. This event is played to handicap. 4 players - total handicap divided by 8, 3 players divided by 6, 2 player divided by 4.
Foursomes: Two players play as partners and use one ball. The partners strike off alternately from the tee and thereafter strike the ball alternately during the play at each hole. Scoring is done as for a stroke round and the total is subject to a deduction of half the partners’ aggregate handicaps.
Aggregate Stableford: Players combine stableford points at the end of the round.
Four Ball Stableford: Teams of 2 each playing individually. Each player’s score is recorded at the end of each hole, and the best score is counted for the team.
Lone Ranger: Lone Ranger, also called Money Ball, Yellow Ball or Pink Ball, puts the onus on one player per team per hole to come through with a good score. Players in a group of four rotate as the “Lone Ranger;” on each hole, the score of the designated Lone Ranger is combined with the low score of the other three team members for the team score.
Match Play: In match play, each hole is a separate competition. The player with the fewest strokes on an individual hole wins that hole; the player winning the most holes wins the match. With handicap, the lower handicap is subtracted from the high handicap. The higher handicap then gets an additional shot on the indexed holes resulting from the subtraction. Ie 23 and 17. The 23 handicapper gets an extra shot on holes indexed 1-6.
Par Bisque: A variation of a par round. Players will determine their handicap stroke allocation for a hole after playing that hole. Allocation of handicap strokes will cease once the player’s full handicap has been used.
Flag Competition: Individual stroke round. First playing group to start the round carries the flag. When the player has played the number of strokes equal to the par of the course plus his handicap, he places a flag in the course at the point where the ball lands. The next player with strokes available to them picks up the flag and continues until he/she uses their allotted strokes. The winner is the player who goes farthest around the course with the allotted number of strokes.
