With great golfing conditions greeting members at the Penola Golf Club on Saturday, a field of 24 took to the layout for the second round of the President's Trophy.
The standout player for the day was Don Ferguson who had an impressive 5-up to win the A grade. Ferguson started off a little rusty on the first three holes before parring the next six holes to return to the club 1-up. After a light refreshment and water he came out firing and was two under the card after four holes thanks to two birdies. Ferguson then had a slight hiccup on the 14th and 15th before parring the last three holes. Finishing runner-up was Greg Hutchesson who just can't get to the top podium spot with a 2-up. His back nine was looking great till the last three holes where he dropped two shots to come in square. Hutchesson also fired up after refuelling and had four wins in a row before the wheels once again got a little wobbly and had three wipes in the four holes. In third was Lindsay Storer who beat Bill Cheers on countback with 1-up. In B grade new member Sam Hill will once again come under the watchful eye of the handicapper as his 3-up was goof enough for the win. He had an uneventful day with only three pars but with 31 shots up his sleeve, he was always going to score well. In runner-up was Bevan Phillips who played his usual consistent golf on the first nine to be square at half time. His back nine started on fire to be 3-up after three before wiping the next three. In third was Matt Stephenson with 1-down. He may have been dreaming of holding the winner's mug but golf being golf, things can change in an instant. Unlike so many others who benefited from a hot dog break his last nine was not what he would have hoped for. The four wipes were not offset by any wins. In fourth was Allan Meyer with 2-down after he had two nines of 1-down. Nearest the pin winners were Ferguson on the seventh whose approach managed to just get on but was as far away as possible from the flag. The ninth was Peter Lunnay and the best second shot on the 11th went to Storer. The chocolates were a much sort after prize with three players in contention with all carding 9-down's but only one can take home the choccies and that went to Tony Gleeson. This weeks's event will be the fifth and final round of the club stableford trophy. Full results here.
