Weather conditions were near perfect for this time of year as 24 players contested the first round of the President’s trophy at the golf course.

The scores reflected the conditions with more than half the field returning a score of square or better, with Blue Kuhl being the standout with a 6 up to win the day and to also win the A grade.

His day started slowly with 2 bogeys before a run 4 pars kick started his card. A little trouble on the relatively easy par 3 was soon forgotten with a birdie par finish on the front 9 to be 5 up on the turn. After the break he struggled to score freely but finished the back 9 1 up.

A further 3 shots back was Andrew Hutchesson on 3 up, edging out Jock Agnew also on 3 up. Senior had a consistent first 9 with one little hiccup with some tree trouble to go to the turn 2 up. The returning 9 was a lot different with a wayward 3rd shot on the 6th finding the cursed pencil pine, as many a ball has done before.

Jock was on song early and was 3 up before the 7th were a bogey from nowhere slowed the old boy up. After the break Jock had a bad run on the outward track wiping the first 3 holes before rebooting his CPU to rack up 4 wins to the finish.  The old Grey Ferg was a shot back making up the final place.

In B grade 2 players finished on 5 up with Allen Meyer getting the nod over Shane “Ned” McPherson. Al struggled to make an impact on the front 9 to go 1 down before the turn. After the break it was a completely different game as he scored freely to have 6 wins and no wipe-outs.

Ned on the other hand was doing no wrong on his first 9 till a little trouble around and on the green of the 18th cost him a shot. After the break he fired up to race to 7 up before 3 wipes out of 4 holes gave him a reality check to finish his round.

Visiting the course again was Nick Wilson who returned a card with 4 up a3 up. Mark Edwards was a shot back on 3 up.

Patrick’s of Coonawarra NTP winners were Paul Harmer on the 7th, being one of a few to actually hit the green, Jock on the 9th and 16th with the best 2nd on the 11th going to Shane.

This week’s event will be the 3rd round of the Club Stableford trophy.
