Stephenson survives in the showers

Matt Stephenson was one of only eight golfers who completed their rounds in the competition at the Penola Golf Club on Saturday.  He was also one of only two players to finish in the positives as he carded 3 up to have the round of the day.

The golf course must have been the epicentre of the cloud burst as the relentless showers rarely let up throughout the afternoon.  12 players in the 22 strong field failed to complete their rounds as the precipitation put a dampener on events. Most frustrated would have been Andrew Hutchesson who was three up at the halfway point, but had no one willing to go on. However, we know Senior is susceptible to choking when the win is in sight.

Stephenson won the B-Grade as he managed to par 5 holes on his way to 3 up. His good score was due to only having 3 losses in difficult conditions. Mark Edwards was runner up in the B-Grade by way of being the only other B-Grader to finish. However his score won’t be revealed, knowing that he had many more losses than wins, perhaps so cold a snowman might have been seen.

Leo Price was on fire in his round as he had 36 off the stick on the back nine to be 5 up for that section, to lead him the A-Grade prize. This included seven pars and a birdie on the 14th. However, minus four on the front nine counteracted most of his good work as the bulk of the rain really settled in; just as half the field had done so back at the clubhouse.

Peter Lunnay finished square with a birdie on the 11th the highlight of his round. He also came a bit undone on his second nine as conditions got tougher.

Peter Walker rounded out the placings as he scored one down, in another consistent Walker effort. Unlike most of the field, he got better in the second nine and score one up for that round.

Visitor Ted Keyte won nearest the pins on the 5th and 9th whilst Blue took out the prize on the 13th. This week’s round will be another Par round, to allow those who didn’t finish to have another crack. The Bill Burley Monthly medal has been rescheduled to April 20th.

Both Pennant teams have a game this week, with Penola hosting both the A-Grade and the Handicap divisions. The A-Grade try to make amends from their first round loss, whilst the handicap team kick off their season this Sunday, with a full squad to pick from.
