Storer Wins

A field of 19 golfers took to the Penola Golf Course on Saturday in threatening condition for the 5th round of the Captain’s Trophy.

Score of the day went to Lindsay Storer in A-Grade with 41 points, narrowly taking the honours from Shane Anderson with 40 points. In 3rd place was Greg Hutchesson on 38 points while Jock Agnew finished 4th with 35 points.

Over in B-Grade the scoring proved a little tougher with Allen Meyer claiming victory with 33 points, 1 clear of Ant Mathys. Peter Walker and Johnny Wilkinson meanwhile both had 30 points which isn’t bad for a bloke nearing 80 – Walker that is.

The NAGA was hotly contested with little to separate Trent Nankivell from Shane McPherson, both with a respectable 26 points.

Next Saturday will feature the PPHS Monthly Medal, always a great event and one not to be missed. Tee-off from 11:30. All welcome.

As a reminder, a Special General Meeting will be held at the clubrooms of the Penola Golf Club on Wednesday, 2nd August at 5:30pm. Details via the club noticeboard, website or from the Secretary.

Ant Mathys wins Par Round on countback

A small field of 16 golfers took to the Penola Golf Course on Saturday in near perfect conditions for a par round, coinciding with the 5th Round of the President’s Trophy.

Score of the day went to Ant Mathys in B-Grade who finished with a +1 on countback from Paul Harmer. In third place was John Wilkinson with a -2 on countback over Shane McPherson.

In A-Grade, Leo Price continued some good form finishing even, this was on the back of a 74 off the stick at Thursday golf. In 2nd, Jeremy Briggs took the honour over Nathan Williams, both with a -1 while Peter Lunnay rounded out the top 4 with a -2.

The nearest the pin winners were Greg Hutchesson on the 9th while Williams claimed the best 2nd on the 12th. If any player had managed to hit the green on the 7th they would have won that prize but all 16 golfers failed to do so.

The NAGA was hotly contested with 4 players tied with a -8, each receiving a quarter of a cherry ripe bar.

Next Saturday will feature a stableford competition and the 5th Round of the Captain’s Trophy. Tee-off from 11:30. All welcome.

Twenty-four golfers braved the wet for the 3rd round of the Captain’s stableford trophy at the Penola Golf Course in Saturday with 7 golfers returning a DNF in the conditions.

Round of the day went to Patron Peter Walker who had an impressive 38 points in B-Grade. Walker was closely followed by Ant Mathys in 2nd with 37 points while Paul Harmer and Brett Williams took 3rd and 4th with 35 and 34 points respectively.

In A-Grade, a countback was required to determine the winner. For the second week in a row, Jock Agnew claimed the honours over David Murray, both with 37 points. In 3rd place was Don Ferguson with 35 points while Andrew Hutchesson took 4th with 34 points.

The nearest the pin winners were Grant Stephenson on the 7th, Richard Barnes on the 9th while Mathys had the best 2nd on the 12th.

The cherished NAGA was conclusively won by David Boyd.

Hill Climbs to the Top

An enthusiastic field of 34 golfers took to the Penola Golf Course last Saturday for the Rabobank Monthly Medal. With glorious, albeit slightly icy conditions on offer, scoring proved somewhat tough for the majority of the field.

Round of the day went to Sam Hill in C-Grade with a nett 71 – the only player to better his handicap. A solid 47 on the front nine was bettered by a 44 on the back to give him 91 off the stick in total. Runner-up and four shots behind Hill was Ant Mathys with a nett 75. In third was Peter Ey with a nett 79 while local Doc Nirmal Grewal took 4th place honours with a nett 80.

Over in B-Grade, the ever reliable Peter Walker claimed a two shot victory with a nett 73 over Curt Evans. Recovering from a dreaded snowman on the first, Walker played consistent golf throughout the round with a birdie on the 13th a highlight. In third place was Peter Lunnay with a nett 76 while Mike Redman took fourth with a nett 77.

A three-way countback in A-Grade was required before Jock Agnew could claim honours with a nett 72. A 44 on the front nine was bettered by a 39 on the back 9, featuring 6 pars. Runner-up was Lindsay Storer while third place went to David Murray whose 4-putt on the 18th ultimately proved costly. Peter Docking rounded out the placings in 4th with a nett 73.

Nearest the pin winners were Greg Hutchesson with the best 3rd on the 17th while twin brother Andrew had the closest on the 9th and Peter Lunnay the 7th.

Lee Bateman took honours in the putting comp with 26 putts in total, featuring 9 one-putts and one that went in from off the green.

The NAGA went to Chris Holden with an offensive nett 91. Surprisingly, Holden still managed to win his top dog game, proving that golf is nothing but a foolish game at times.

Next Saturday is the 3rd round of the Captain’s Trophy and will be a stableford competition. Tee-off from 11:30. Once again, all welcome.
